Abstract

Nipah (Nypa fruticans) is a type of palm that is widely used by the community. The local people of Jambi use Nipah leaves as a tobacco membrane for cigarettes. However, we found reports of cigarette use cases having implications for the severity of spontaneous pneumothorax disease. A 57-year-old man came to the emergency room suffering from shortness of breath, right-side chest discomfort, yellowish-green sputum cough, abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, decreased appetite, and inability to sleep. For two years, this man consumed ten Nipah membrane cigarettes he made independently daily, resulting in lung disease. The lungs were found to be asymmetrical with the weakened fremitus of the right lung stem; percussion revealed hyper resonance in the right lung and resonance in the left lung; auscultation revealed the presence of a decrease in vesicular breathing sounds in the right lung, and other breathing sounds crackling in both lungs. The patient's severe partially compensatory respiratory acidosis indicated levels of pH, pO2, pCO2, HCO3, total CO2, and BE. Sinus tachycardia, normoaxis and suitable atrial hypertrophy were found. The luscen region is visible, and the white line of the pleura on the right hemithorax shows the pneumothorax of the right lung. This case is relatively rare, and excess Nipah leaf membrane cigarettes increase the severity of spontaneous pneumothorax disease that causes COPD.

Abstract

One of the medicinal plants that are widely used and available is Curcuma xanthorrhiza. In a daily consumption, C. xanthorrhiza is processed into herbal drinks through a decoction process. However, many biological activities of a plant may be sensitive to the temperature due. Thus, this study is analyzing the effect of temperature on one of the major compounds of C. xanthorrhiza, namely curcumin, along with its antioxidant activity. This research was conducted to obtain the optimum temperature for C. xanthorrhiza processing in order to standardize it as phytopharmaca product. The results showed that a temperature of 100oC was the optimal temperature for the decoction with an extraction rate of 8 ppm and an antioxidant activity of 165 ppm. The curcumin content seems not too sensitive to temperature when seen from the levels obtained at 70oC, 90oC and 100oC which are both 8 ppm. On the other hand, the antioxidant activity of C. xanthorrhiza at temperatures below 100oC has no significant activity which indicates the effect of temperature on its antioxidant activity. The curcumin standard itself has an IC50 of 120 ppm while the IC50 of vitamin C is 24.3 ppm. As it seen from the insignificant antioxidant activity of the decoction extract below 100oC, it is possible that there are other compounds besides curcumin which are extracted only at 100oC which has the agonist effect on the antioxidant activity

Abstract

Indonesia has a tropical climate which makes the body produce excess oil. This triggers the occurrence of acne, because it can clog skin pores and cause the formation of bacterial colonies. Watermelon is a fruit that has many health benefits. Generally, people consume the contents and throw away the white flesh and skin (watermelon rind), even though this part has good benefits for the skin because it contains several biochemical compounds that act as antibacterial. One of the preparations used for skin problems is cream. This study aims to produce a formula for the preparation of watermelon rind extract cream that complies with pharmaceutical requirements and is stable in storage. Watermelon rind cream preparation is made with a concentration of watermelon rind extract, namely FI 7.5%; FII 12.5%, and FIII 20%. Finished preparations were tested for physical stability which included organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, irritation tests, cream type tests, spreadability and stability tests. The watermelon rind extract cream obtained is green in color, has a distinctive smell of extract and rose oil, is homogeneous, and is of the M/A type. The pH of the watermelon rind extract cream is in a range that is still acceptable to the skin and has good spreadability and does not cause irritation to the skin. During the storage period, the watermelon rind extract cream did not experience physical changes and homogeneity, and did not experience a significant decrease in pH and spreadability with a p-value > 0.05. This shows that the preparation of watermelon rind extract cream meets pharmaceutical requirements and is stable during storage.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries with a diversity of plants, one of which is the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum L.). Some compounds found in potato peels have pharmacological activities, one of which is antioxidants. This study aimed to determine the total phenol content and the antioxidant activity produced by potato peel ethanol extract. The methods for total phenolic content used the Folin-Ciocalteu method and the DPPH(2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method for antioxidant activity. The result obtained from this study was that the total phenol content in ethaol extract of potato peel was 152.9 mg GAE / g extract and antioxidant activity showed with IC50 value was 30,339 ppm, which means that potato peel ethanol extract has a very strong antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Dry skin is the most common skin problem, so moisturizers are used to prevent it. White skin (mesocarp) of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] (MW) has the potential to be formulated into a moisturizing gel preparation since it contains vitamins and citrulline which also possess antioxidant activity. This study aimed to formulate a moisturizing gel preparation from MW extract as an antioxidant. MW was extracted by maceration using 70% ethanol and formulated into moisturizing gel preparation at concentrations of 5% (F1), 10% (F2), and 15% (F3). Gel preparations were evaluated physically, and determined their moisture content and antioxidant activity. MW extract was a brown color with 25.02% yield. The evaluation results showed that all formulations met the standard parameters of good gel preparations including organoleptic, homogeneity, spread-ability, adhesion, pH, and viscosity, and did not irritate the skin. The skin moisture after application of F1, F2, and F3 respectively were 29.49%; 36.63%; and 43.48%. IC50 values for F1, F2, and F3 respectively were 156.42; 149.24, and 138.05 µg/mL. The moisturizing gel preparation from MW extract met all the standard parameters of good gel preparation, could increase the percentage of skin moisture, and had moderate antioxidant activity.
